Setting Email Folders on iPhone

Configuring your iPhone to use specific email folders like Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Junk E-Mail ensures that your emails are stored correctly on the AfterNorth servers, making them accessible across all your devices. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up these folders for your IMAP email account using the iPhone Mail app.

Prerequisites

Before you begin:

  • Ensure your AfterNorth email account is set up in the iPhone Mail app.
  • Confirm that your email account uses IMAP (not POP). IMAP allows folder synchronization with the mail server.
  • Verify that your email account uses the standard folder names: Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk E-Mail, and Drafts.

Note: The folder names for AfterNorth are Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk E-Mail. Ensure you select these exact folders when configuring your account.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps to map your iPhone email folders to the desired mail.afternorth.com server folders:

  1. Open the Settings App

Locate and tap the Settings app on your iPhone's home screen.

  2. Navigate to Mail Settings

Scroll down and tap Mail. Then, tap Accounts to view all configured email accounts.

  3. Select Your Email Account

    Tap your mail.afternorth.com email account.

  4. Access Account Settings

Tap Account (displayed at the top with your email address). Ensure the account type is listed as IMAP. If it’s POP, contact mail.afternorth.com support to reconfigure the account as IMAP.

  5. Go to Advanced Settings

Scroll down and tap Advanced under the Mail section.

  6. Configure Mailbox Behaviors

In the Mailbox Behaviors section, you’ll see options for Drafts, Sent, Deleted, and Junk. Tap each one to set the corresponding folder:

    • Sent Mailbox: Tap Sent, then select Sent Items under On the Server.
    • Deleted Mailbox: Tap Deleted, then select Deleted Items under On the Server.
    • Junk Mailbox: Tap Junk, then select Junk E-Mail under On the Server.
    • Drafts Mailbox: Tap Drafts, then select Drafts under On the Server.

Ensure you select folders under the On the Server section to store emails on the mail.afternorth.com server, making them accessible on other devices.

  7. Save Your Changes

After selecting the appropriate server folders, tap Done or the back arrow to return to the previous screen. Tap Done again to save all changes.

  8. Test the Configuration

Open the Mail app, send a test email, delete an email, or mark an email as junk. Check that the emails appear in the correct folders (Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk E-Mail) by logging into your mail.afternorth.com account via a web browser or another device.

Warning: If you select a local folder (e.g., "On My iPhone") instead of a server folder, emails will only be stored on your iPhone and won’t sync with other devices.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Folders Not Appearing? Ensure your email account is properly synced. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Account] and tap Fetch New Data to enable automatic syncing.
  • Incorrect Folder Mapping? Double-check the folder names in your mail.afternorth.com webmail interface and match them exactly in the iPhone settings.
  • Junk Folder Missing? If the Junk E-Mail folder isn’t available, mark emails as junk manually by swiping left on a message, tapping More, and selecting Move to Junk.
  • Emails Disappearing? Check the Remove setting under Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Account] > Advanced > Deleted Messages. Set it to Never to prevent automatic deletion of trashed emails.

Additional Notes

These instructions apply to iOS 18 and earlier versions, though the exact menu names may vary slightly. Emails in the Junk E-Mail folder on mail.afternorth.com are automatically deleted after 120 days.
